Pop Up Camper Renovation

Updated: Jul 3, 2022

BEFORE AND AFTER

Free Camper! A friend offered us a pop up camper that they were no longer using and had been sitting for quite some time. We aren't big campers, more of glampers, but who can pass up a free camper....we decided to go for it!

We set it up and were happy with its condition, for a 1996 camper it actually was in really good shape.....but it could be better, right? I love a good project!

First, I took out the cushions and tore down the curtains.

Cleaned everything out and found a little animal home in one of the drawers. Then I put the mattresses out in the yard and sprayed them with febreze and spearmint oil. I soaked the inside of the canvas walls/windows with Clorox and used a magic eraser to scrub and scrub.

I cut the top strips off of the old curtains to reuse the curtain hooks, but some of the curtains in the camper were missing, so I also purchased some extra curtain hooks, https://amzn.to/3N9U3vQ. I bought the cheapest curtains Target had to offer and cut them to size. I am NOT a sewer, can hardly sew a straight line, but I managed to throw these together.....very proud of myself :)

I decided I would use canvas drop-cloths to reupholster the cushions and also make a valance because this would be a super cheap option, https://amzn.to/3tOQggI. I cut the edge of the drop-cloth 14" long and sewed a little ruffle along the top, then we stapled it into place along the ceiling of the camper.

Love my staple gun, you need a good one for stapling into the ceiling of the camper and to hold the fabric into place on the cushions too, https://amzn.to/3zPAE0k.

We used a 1/8" hardboard panel and cut to size for the back of each cushion. I figured this would be the easiest way to not sew new cushion covers and also would provide a bit of stabilization for sleeping on the cushions. Again, I used the canvas drop cloths to cover the cushions. I needed 4 of the large pieces to make the valance and cover every cushion, https://amzn.to/3tOQggI. The corner cushions were really tricky and like I said, I am not a sewer, so I did my best. I then sprayed all of the newly covered cushions with Scotchgard Fabric spray, https://amzn.to/3NbPXn0.

I painted the cabinets by first washing them well, primed, two coats of paint and then a coat of poly, https://amzn.to/3QEEaAS. I thought maybe the poly would help protect the cabinets from all the movement and things sliding around inside the camper. I also decided that for now we probably wouldn't use the sink area, so I painted it but left it out of the camper to have more room for other things (a dresser for storage fit perfectly and could be stored inside the camper when it folds up too, https://amzn.to/3N9NjhH)

I bought waterproof mattress pads to leave on the mattresses, I thought this would help protect them and also cover the purple color, https://amzn.to/3QAUGS3. And I also bought some screen repair tape to fix a couple holes in the screens, https://amzn.to/3Owwiz9. And some flex tape to fix a couple holes in the canvas, https://amzn.to/3QAGXL3. I needed new light bulbs, https://amzn.to/3OTGeDb and I wanted even more lights, so I added these puck lights that run on batteries and are super fun, https://amzn.to/3I3Tq69. I also ordered this fun light and fan combo that plugs in the existing camper plug, https://amzn.to/3ORS6Wf.

Love the way it turned out and can't wait to get to use it!
